Leisure
Yarmouth is the smallest town in Britain, set in a conservation area with its own castle, built by Henry VIII to protect the harbour.
An abundance of footpaths cross the island's rolling countryside - walks from Yarmouth lead up the River Yar Estuary and over the chalk downs that form a ridge from Freshwater to Newport.
Freshwater Bay and Alum Bay are examples of the beautiful stretches of coastline within a few miles of Medlars Bed and Breakfast.
The Isle of Wight has many famous recommendations, close to the heart of Alfred Lord Tennyson - who celebrated the island and its encircling sea with such poems as 'Crossing The Bar'.
Places to visit include:
- Osborne House, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made their family home
- Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles was imprisoned
- Gardens that are open to the public
The area of the Needles Battery is owned by the National Trust, as is most of the West Wight. Many winter migrant birds shelter here, in places which include the nearby bird sanctuary, on the Newtown River.
Liz, the owner of Medlars, can help in the planning of walking routes or give advice on local places of interest. Activities and amenities close to this location include horse riding, safe sandy beaches, sailing [tuition available] and golfing on attractive courses.
