Location
Machrihanish is located at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula.
By car, it is approximately three hours drive from Glasgow through magnificent scenery - along Loch Lomond to Arrochar, over the 'Rest and Be Thankful' point to Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Campbeltown and Machrihanish.
Alternative routes to Machrihanish:
- Take Ardrossan-Brodick [on Arran] ferry, then seasonal Lochranza-Claonaig ferry.
- Use regular bus service [approximately four hours to/from Glasgow].
- Arrive by air [approximately 25 minutes flying time from Glasgow airport].
Leisure
Kintyre has a mild 'Gulf Stream' climate - palm trees abound, snow is rare and if it does occasionally rain, put on your macintosh!
The countryside offers a wide variety to explore and enjoy, from peaceful farmland to wild cliffs, moorland, forests, sandy beaches and a visit to the famous Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse.
The commercial centre of the region is Campbeltown, which has all the amenities of a small town and fishing port.
Laid out by Tom Morris over a century ago, the Machrihanish Championship Golf Course is, quite simply, one of life's genuinely pleasant surprises.
With breath-taking views of Islay, Jura and Gigha, huge undulating greens, an open drive across the beach, something like a dozen blind shots over various horizons, some wicked rough, a ball hungry river and unstuffy atmosphere in the clubhouse, this course has everything.
Green fees are reasonable and there are attractive concessions for weekly and fortnightly [14 day] tickets. There is also a 9 hole ladies' course, which is ideal for young people.
For the sportsman, fisherman, birdwatcher and naturalist, there are endless opportunities to do great deeds and see rare sights.
There are facilities for riding, tennis, bowling, putting, sailing, sea angling, loch and river fishing for trout, indoor swimming and unlimited walking and hiking as well as 3 other golf courses in the area.
