This privately owned country hotel is situated on Scotland's northern seaboard and has a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Comfortable and informal, it is 18 miles west of Thurso on the A836 and 40 miles north of Helmsdale on the A897.
The Melvich Hotel is the antithesis of frenetic urban life - guests come here to relax and enjoy the superb views from the bedrooms, lounge bar, dining room and garden.
The cliff top position overlooks Melvich Bay to the island of Hoy, with the Orkney mainland beyond.
There is also a view over the Halladale Estuary and the Pentland Firth.
Accommodation
The modern, well equipped bedrooms all feature private en-suite facilities, colour television, radio alarm clock, tea and coffee making facilities.
Food and Drink
A full Scottish breakfast is served each morning. The menus for other meals cover all tastes and budgets.
Specialities of the hotel's cuisine include local game and salmon, seafood [including Melvich Lobster and crab], Caithness roast beef, plus steaks and traditional pub food.
Guests can sit by the cosy peat fire in the lounge bar and sample the hotel's wide range of malt whiskies and wines. There is also a games room with pool table adjacent to the public bar.

Location
The Melvich Hotel is only 20 minutes from Scrabster and the Orkney Ferry.
From the south it is best approached by the A9 from Inverness to Helmsdale and then by the A897 direct to Melvich.
The hotel is situated within a friendly crofting community between the villages of Melvich and Portskerra.
Leisure
This location provides easy access to some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Scotland, including Melvich and Strathy.
There are endless opportunities for walking, bird and wildlife watching - with an RSPB reserve at Forsinard [golden eagles, osprey, bagders, otters, wilcats and red deer].
Whales and dolphins are occasional visitors to this coastline.
Day trips to the Orkney islands from John O'Groats enable guests to have a comprehensive tour covering Scapa Flow, Skara Brae and The Italian Chapel.
For hill walkers the local Munros are Ben Loyal and Ben Hope. Enjoy a challenge of a different kind at the links 18-hole golf course in Reay, 10 minutes from the hotel.
Salmon fishing can be arranged on the nearby river Halladale and trout fishing is available on the scores of hill lochs - expert tuition is on hand to make the most of the area's many facilities. For the hunting fraternity a variety of activities on nearby estates can be arranged.
