The Green Park Hotel

Pitlochry, Perthshire, Central Scotland

General Details

The Green Park Hotel, Pitlochry

This long established and popular hotel is located in the outskirts of Pitlochry, a town which lies at the heart of Highland Scotland.

Built in 1866 for the Cowan family as a summer retreat from Glasgow, The Green Park was converted into a country house hotel in 1937.

The Green Park Hotel - Extensive Grounds and Gardens

The hotel's situation was enhanced in 1951 with the building of the Pitlochry Dam and the creation of Loch Faskally.

The lochside frontage is unique within Pitlochry and the property has become a well-known landmark in the locality.

The extensive grounds run down to the still waters of Loch Faskally and the eye is drawn to the hills rising on the far side of the loch.

The gardens consistently give rise to favourable comment from guests and every effort is made to keep these colourful and well maintained. They are not intended as show pieces but rather to complement the other features of the property and its situation.

The Green Park Hotel - Large and Spacious Public Rooms

Inside, the principle lounges, halls and the lounge bar are all spacious and full of light. As is inevitable in a family run, country house type hotel, the background and enthusiasms of the owning family emerge clearly.

There is a generous availability of books throughout the hotel and a wide range of pictures and paintings in public areas and bedrooms.

The persistent artistic thread running through the selection is that the subjects should all be on a Scottish theme or be painted by artists living in Scotland.

A Scottish artist is commissioned annually to paint a picture on a local theme and, at the end of the year, this picture is the prize in a draw - all guests resident during that year are automatically included.

The Green Park Hotel - Overlooking Loch Faskally

Guests are always drawn to the large lounge windows overlooking the loch. On the day of their arrival they are offered complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits to help them settle into the style of the hotel and recover from the rigours of their journey.

A major attraction of Pitlochry is its widely respected Festival Theatre. The hotel works closely with the theatre and arranges bookings and concessions for guests.

Accommodation

As the hotel has expanded over the years from an original country mansion into its present form there is no question of the bedrooms being of standard shape and style.

The Green Park Hotel - Family Bedroom

All are different and unique in terms of size, furnishings, colours and pictures. Many regular hotel guests have particular rooms which hold fond memories for them.

Almost all rooms have splendid views over the lawns and flower beds down to the waters of the loch.

The Green Park Hotel - Bedrooms with views of Loch Faskally

Bedrooms are mainly twin or double although some are designed to accommodate three people, with single rooms also available.

There are ground floor rooms which are obviously attractive to those who have difficulty with stairs.

The Green Park Hotel - Well Equipped Bedrooms

All bedrooms are well equipped and have:

  • Private en-suite facilities.
  • Direct dial telephone.
  • Colour television and clock radio alarm.
  • Hairdryer and trouser press.
  • Tea and coffee making facilities.

Porterage is always available at the hotel, both on arrival and departure.

Food and Drink

The Green Park Hotel - Dining Room

In accordance with customer demand, the principal meals are breakfast and dinner, while a light lunch is available in the sun lounge to hotel residents.

Special diets are catered for when sensible notice of particular needs is provided.

In the evenings, guests are offered a glass of sherry while they consider their selection from the menu - which is freshly prepared each day.

The Green Park Hotel - Superb Cuisine

The food is presented in a fashion which is consistent with the character of a Country House. Dishes are formed from fresh local produce and they draw on the established traditions of Scottish and French cooking in their preparation.

The Automobile Association (AA) has given the coveted award of its Red Rosette to the chef and his team. 'Taste of Scotland' has given a high percentage rating to the hotel dining room.

The Green Park Hotel has a full hotel licence, with wines and refreshments available from the bar at all reasonable times.

Leisure

While the principle attractions of the Green Park and Pitlochry are the serenity and calm of their location, the Festival Theatre provides a complement to the dramatic situation of the town.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre

The famous 'Theatre in the Hills' was founded in 1951 and has become one of Perthshire's top attractions. A wide selection of plays is available ranging through farce and comedy to tragedy.

The popular style of the theatre's programme makes it possible to 'Stay six days, see six plays'.

The physical situation and instinctive style of the hotel makes it attractive to couples or small groups who wish to take a restful and relaxing short break.

Some guests spend the days taking advantage of the many delightful walks through the rich woods, along the streams and lochs or out onto the open hills and mountains.

Others prefer to drive along the quiet roads through the glens of Perthshire and the nearby Highlands.

In the late autumn and winter months, as the days grow shorter and the attractions of warmth and indoor pursuits beckon, the hotel offers:

Bridge Meetings organised and supervised by tutors of international experience. There are meetings for players of competitive standard and meetings for those who are in the earliest stages of learning the game.

Curling at Pitlochry Ice Rink

Painting courses where aspiring artists and 'dabblers' can receive tuition and close supervision in watercolours.

Curling weekends during which the facilities of the local curling rink are made available to clubs or groups of people who are drawn to 'the roaring game'.

Whisky tasting on Saturday nights, during the winter months, provides an interesting and comfortable way of rounding off an evening.
