Barend is close to Sandyhills, Dumfries and Galloway, on the south west coast of Scotland, an area of outstanding natural beauty and historic interest.

A lovely sandy beach is just 400 yards away.

There are 16 golf courses within a 20 mile radius of Barend, including the championship links course at Southerness.

Barend Holiday Village is less than a few hundred yards from the sea, in an excellent south-facing position.

This marvellous setting overlooks a landscaped loch where otters can occasionally be seen enjoying the free fishing!

The forests and hills all around provide shelter and most chalets have a view of the loch, Colvend Golf Course or the sea.

Pets are welcome in many chalets, while other chalets are designated as 'pet free'. Dog walking and day kennels can be arranged.

All chalets have downstairs sleeping accommodation for ease of access and if this is important to you, a level path to the chalet can be requested.

Accommodation

Barend Holiday Village - Scotland Vacation Rentals

The 3 styles of chalet are all built of solid logs in the same way that has been used for many years in Scandinavia. They are specially designed for a comfortable family holiday.

The largest chalet is the 2-storey Type A, with ground floor accommodation as follows:

  • Double bedroom
  • Bathroom and kitchen
  • Large living/dining area opening onto a large deck

At first floor level there is also:

  • A double or twin bedroom with an en-suite toilet and hand basin
  • A bunkroom/playroom which sleeps up to 4 and opens onto another deck

The smaller Type B chalet is similar in layout, but with a single bedroom and smaller living area on the ground floor. Upstairs, there is also a double or twin room and a smaller bunk room, with 2 single beds.

Chalet Living Area

The Type C chalet is of Finnish design, all on 1 level, with triple-glazing and very high insulation in the floors, walls and roof.

The Type C chalet has a large open-plan living/dining area and kitchen, with 1 double bedroom [some with vanity units], 1 twin bedroom, 1 twin or bunk bedroom and a bathroom.

All chalets are well equipped and centrally heated for enjoyable holidays throughout the year. In addition to standard kitchen fittings, all have microwaves and there are televisions and videos in all chalets.

Some chalets have dishwashers, some have a DVD player and some satellite television channels.

BarendBar and Restaurant

The on-site 'BarendBar and Restaurant' is housed in old farm buildings which have been restored.

The buildings form an attractive courtyard setting with outdoor heating.

The seating areas alongside the 2 terraced full-size boules courts have spectacular views over the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian hills and mountains.

Enjoy a snack and drink in the courtyard or choose from the wide and varied menu in the restaurant and bar, where packed lunches can be ordered.

There is easy access to this part of Scotland from all directions, and if you drive there you will enjoy quiet roads throughout the area.

There are train services to Dumfries, which is 20 miles away.

Prestwick, Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports are within easy reach, and Barend can arrange for you to be met by taxi if this is required.

Leisure

Indoor Swimming Pool Children's Adventure Playground

The indoor heated swimming pool and sauna is open all year except for a very short period for annual maintenance.

There is also a children's outdoor play area.

There is no additional charge for use of these facilities for guests of Barend Holiday Village.

Other activities available locally include:

Cycling and Walking
The whole area is perfect for these pursuits, with its unspoilt countryside and quiet roads, lanes, tracks and coastal paths. There are also purpose built [Forestry Commission - the Seven Stanes] mountain bike tracks of all standards close by.

Riding
There is an approved Riding School close to Barend where weekly courses and hourly lessons are available.

Fishing
Apart from the loch containing carp, which the site overlooks, there are many rivers and lochs throughout the area. There are centres for sea angling at Kippford and Kirkcudbright.

Bird Watching
You can watch large birds of prey from the vantage point of your own deck and there are often wild geese on the loch. Further afield there are a large number of wildfowl and seabirds all along the coast and the R.S.P.B. reserve at Mersehead is close by. Less than twenty miles away you can enjoy the successful Galloway Red Kite Trail.

Golf Course Fairways Golf - Putting For A Birdie!

There are many wonderful, varied and quiet courses throughout the area. Colvend is an excellent 18-hole course, less than a mile from the site - some chalets overlook the fairways.

Southerness, a Championship links course, is only a 15 minute drive away.

The climate in this part of south west Scotland is beneficially affected by the Gulf Stream. It is a rarity for the weather to prevent play on the golf courses, even in the depths of winter.

Horse Racing
Carlisle and Ayr racecourses are just over 1 hour's drive away.

Sailing
Kippford, just 5 miles away, has a flourishing sailing community, and is the headquarters of the Solway Yacht Club.

Touring and Sightseeing
There are many beautiful gardens in the area which are open to the public, including the Scottish National Trust's Threave Garden, where the grounds are open all year.

Whilst on holiday visit the many wonderful ancient and historic buildings and monuments in the area. At the nearby Dalbeattie Museum you can discover the true story of First Officer Murdoch, of Titanic fame.

There are many attractions associated with Dumfries' most famous adopted son, Robert Burns, along with the birthplace of John Paul Jones, founder of the U.S. Navy, which is nearby at Arbigland [only a 15 minute drive from Barend].

There are interesting and scenic drives like the 'Queensway' and the 'Raiders Road' which will introduce you to the landscape of the Highlands without even leaving the county!
