Location
Applecross nestles between the stunning mountains of Wester Ross and the sea of the Inner Sound.
On the edge of the Applecross Peninsula on the north-west coast of Scotland, it is approached over the highest road pass in Britain, the 2,053 ft Bealach Na Ba (Pass of the Cattle).
The nearest railway station is Strathcarron - 20 miles away (scenic Kyle of Lochalsh line).
The nearest commercial airport is Inverness - 85 miles away.
Leisure
Long considered as one of the most remote corners on the British mainland - and still known as a haven of enormous beauty and tranquillity - Applecross was declared a sanctuary in 673 AD by the Irish monk Maelrubha.
To the north is the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve (Torridon mountains). To the south is the picturesque National Trust village of Plockton and the Isle of Skye.
Wester Ross is perhaps the last wilderness in Europe, famed for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. Frequently sighted on the Applecross Peninsula are stags which roam the heather-clad hillsides.
Grey seals can be seen from the garden of Sanctuary Cottage and in the lochs of the indented coastline. More occasionally porpoises and even the mysterious profile of a submarine lurks in the Sound.
The area is home to the golden eagle and pine marten - and the last remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forests. The world famous Inverewe Gardens are to the north of the Peninsula.
Applecross and its environs offers superb opportunities for most outdoor activities such as walking, photography, bird-watching, fishing, mountain biking, sailing and canoeing, or for the less active, just doing nothing much in a majestic landscape.
